most courts have a family law support section. They should be able to help, or you can contact the duty lawyer at the court house, as they are paid to help people with legal issues at court.

Can I represent my mother in a divorce?
Question by : Can I represent my mother in a divorce?
My dead beat father has been threatening my mum to willingly sign divorce papers and my mum refused on the premises that we live in our grandparents house on my father’s side and they warned us that if my parents got a divorce they’d kick us out. I’m not sure if they really meant it, but my mother is real worried about it so she is refusing to sign anything. So he hired a attorney and got the paper works for a divorce.
Hiring an attorney is expensive, I would like for us to represent ourselves but the problem is my mum’s English isn’t that great when it ventures into the legal system. Both my parents have limited knowledge in English and my dad has hired an attorney at $ 200 an hour to help him. I’ve read that in order to practice law you need to be licensed, does that extend to family courts as well? We live in California.
I know California courts offer short seminars on divorces/self-representation but that wouldn’t do much for us if I couldn’t represent her. In any case I’ll be heavily involved as she has poor English, I’ll be the one to translate between her and our attorney. Are there any lawyers that do pro bono in northern California, more specifically Contra Costa county? I have sites for them but I’m appealing to anyone who has personal experiences in this field. Thanks in advance.
Quick question, is it weird that my dad in his legal forms chose to be the legal guardian of my brother yet he designates my mum to have physical custody of him? There are three boxes for that question, petitioner, responder, joint, so it struck me as odd the way the forms we’re filled. I think he’s hired a cr@ppy lawyer, misspelled our home address, his work place, his occupation.
